Abstract

Spiritual needs of patients who are sensitive, sympathetic and even empathetic must be the focus of a nurse’s service as we are not only as a cure for the disease but rather spiritual needs that we sometimes ignore. Lack of awareness and fulfillment of it, always feel that it is only the task of pastoral care assistance. Instead, nurses must know and understand, so that empathy arises more prominently. This study aims at determining the relationship of knowledge with the fulfillment of the spiritual needs of patients in the Inpatient Room of the Santa Elisabeth Hospital in Medan 2016. This type of research is cross-sectional. The population in this study is nurses in the Inpatient Room of the Santa Elisabeth Hospital in Medan. The sampling technique is purposive sampling in a sample of 40 people. Data were collected by using a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test. The results were obtained by respondents who have the best level of knowledge about the spiritual that is 29 people (72.5%), respondents and spiritual needs 22 people (55.0%). Statistical test results obtained p-value = 0.022 so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between nurses' knowledge and the fulfillment of the spiritual needs of patients in the inpatient room at the Santa Elisabeth Hospital in Medan.
